This essay will be about the perspective of three completely different people and their view of the Mumbai, Sunil and Abdul are friends that hang around the slums and international airport together. Asha is a middle age and unofficial slumlord. This essay will show the different views on poverty, and how the three have different roles. Katherine Boo creates the three different perspective by the three different status in the Annawadi slums.
Asha is middle age women who was born and raised in north-eastern Maharashtra but she moved to Annawadi because there were more opportunity’s for her to make herself something. Asha moved to Annawadi and that’s is where she learned her skill set. “she had by now past the obvious truth that Mumbai was a hive of hope and ambition” This quote shows the perspective of Annawadi by Asha explaining how Mumbai is full of chances. The city has a reputation of suffering from poverty so this quote is strong to support the perspective from Asha. Annawadi slums faced the rich in the international airport that was metres from the slums and where the kids spend their childhood.
Sunil is a young boy in the slums who is a scavenger for metal to sell. Sunil is very liked in the slum. He spends the day collecting scrap metal to sell and make money for his family.” Sunil was as seed of a boy, smaller even than abdul, but he considered himself more sophisticated than the other scavengers” Sunil was a young grafter. He is young and out all the time trying to find a metal to sell to his friend Abdul. This shows the perspective of annawadi by using little children to find metal in dangerous places so they could provide for their family
Abdul is a teenager in the slums who is more looked up to by anyone in the slums. He isn’t so much of a scavenger because the scavengers go to him to sell all the findings. He also aswell as Sunil faces the rich airport next to the the suffering slums. ” January’s incomes being pivotal to the hussains latest escape from annawadi” Boo shows Abdul’s perspective of his hometown by using the fact that Abdul provides for his family and he is the hussains only way to escape poverty. This is presenting how young kids are their family’s only hope because they lost hope in annawadi.
Asha being known as a slum Lord due to her education is a good name for her. She also had lost hope in the city. This is ironic because asha is said to be more fortunate then most of the individuals in slums and she is still complaining about annawadi. “Was there a soul in this unriching, unequal City who didn’t blame her dissatisfaction on someone else?” This is a stronger quote to show the the poverty of India. Asha left her hometown for more career paths but still expresses the fact that annawadi is also unfortunate. The rhetorical question shows the lack of interest in the slum.
Sunil and his little sister sunita used to be very quiet kids who never left the family hut. As they got older they started to engage with the other kids in the slums so as Sunil got older he had to take the responsibility to earn money for his family like the other young children in the slums. “In his first weeks home his scavenging skills were rusty, he took the sandals from his sleeping father to sell to Abdul for food” family’s had to suffer things like no clothing or home furniture just so they could afford food for their family and could survive. Boo shows a perspective of the children in Mumbai. Scavenging for like a skill in the slum.
Abdul is a key part of all three families and individuals life and anybody in the slums. But he spends his time making money for his and other families he doesn’t get to see his own. He has a skill of making money and grafting in the slums that why he has a higher status and a lot more respect then all the other scavengers. “Besides this was the gental going hour in which he hated annawadi least” Abdul was born and raised in the city and this quote shows he isn’t proud of his hometown. Also the irony is that Abdul is respected more than any of the scavengers and he still loses hope in his slum and annawadi in general.
Katheren Boo used three different people who has three different status to show the the real ness of what goes on in Indian poverty. She used all three characters to show it. The book is showing me that there are always money in countries but some places are just not supported.
